SVLAS Response to Virginians Impacted by Hurricane Helene
Hurricane Helene struck Virginia causing widespread damage starting on September 25, 2024. On October 1, 2024, President Biden declared a major disaster with people in the following seven areas now eligible to receive federal disaster assistance โ and all of these affected localities are within the service area of Southwest Virginia Legal Aid (SVLAS).

- City of Galax
Often the legal needs of natural disaster victims donโt arise in the immediate aftermath of the event, but they will come up in the weeks, months, and years following the disaster. Know that SVLAS is ready and able to assist you as you navigate your way through FEMA applications, insurance claims, getting official documents, if you are denied emergency benefits from social services, or other legal issues that arise from the disaster.
