Facing Eviction? Know Your Rights!
Radford, VA โ This Monday, March 4th, at 6 P.M., Southwest Virginia Legal Aid Society and Causeway Community Action will host a public education seminar on basic tenantsโ rights under Virginia state law, applicable to all types of landlord-tenant relationships. There will also be a specific focus on the rights of tenants who receive various types of federal subsidies, including Housing Choice Vouchers and Project-Based Vouchers. We will discuss the HUD regulations that govern those tenancies, including the process of household and income recertifications, and how a failure to complete those timely under the HUD regulations, can prevent a property owner from applying rent calculations retroactively. We will also discuss Virginia law surrounding what a tenant should and should not do upon receiving eviction notices, being served with an Unlawful Detainer, or being offered repayment plans on balances the tenant does not believe they owe.
Legal Aid will be providing eligibility screening onsite for those seeking free legal services.
